COOK OUTS + GAME NIGHT

MAY 5, 2012
Good company, good food, good music and a few good games.
That is the formula for some great times.

Last Saturday was spent with a hike to Hebron Rock Colony and then an impromptu night of grilling out with some of our good friends here in Boone. With graduation right around the corner (literally, in one week), we have been trying to take full advantage of all our friends being in the same town. Time is just flying by and college is coming to an end. Our friendships are everlasting, but it will be bittersweet seeing everyone going separate ways. Anyway, our cook out included burgers, hot dogs, coleslaw, potato chips and french onion dip! Yum, yum, yum. We also had an intense game of Taboo (boys vs. girls) and a game of Resistance (which I always get extremely frustrated and angry when I play). Days are these are the perfect recipe for great times.

I'm going to miss these people.

ONE DRESS, ONE MONTH

May 3, 2012

If you saw me during the month of April, you may have noticed I was wearing the same black maxi dress every single day. No, I wasn't being a lazy bum. No, I didn't forget to do laundry. I was wearing it for a cause. I wore the same dress as part of One Dress, One Month, a movement which aims to raise awareness about sex trafficking. Women around the world are stuck in situations where they are powerless to change, so we didn't change our clothes. Men were also involved with the movement. They vowed to wear the same purple shirt throughout the month. [Purple represents justice].

Limiting ourselves to one article of clothing helps represent the entrapment those in the sex trade feel. Everyday individuals are used in this abusive market. I thought it was a strategic and innovative movement to really create awareness of an issue. It is quite different from just sharing information or donating (although those are great, too) because it made their situations real and it impacted me as an individual. It took dedication, commitment and patience for those who participated and I've learned a lot from this experience.

Do I think it raised awareness?
Absolutely. Personally, I could have made more of an effort to make people notice what I was doing and why. With a black dress, wearing different cardigans and accessories with it  and only having classes two days out of the week, some didn't notice I wore the same dress at all. It could be a lack of their attention or it could be because I "dressed it up" each day. Maybe if I didn't focus on making the dress look different, people would have noticed more. Regardless, I still brought it up constantly in conversations with friends and family which brought more attention to the issue.

An extra lesson learned
As you know, the main reason for One Dress, One Month was to raise awareness of sex trafficking, however, I learned another important lesson this month. Like many other individuals, I am guilty of excessive consumption, spending money on goods and services I don't particularly need. I care too much about how I look and suffer from that "gotta-have-it syndrome" where I end up with racks full of clothing and not enough days to wear them. This month I learned less is more and you don't need as much as you think you did. It felt nice to not waste time thinking or caring what people thought of my outfits. I realized after looking at my closet that there was no need to be as materialistic as I have been in the past. I am better than the tangible things that make up my life. I do not see myself giving up my entire closet, but this month has made me more conscious about the wanting and the "needing" of clothing.

Would I participate in One Dress, One Month again? Absolutely.
Check out the story The Appalachian wrote about the movement here.
Oh, look! They quoted me :)

SELF-LOVE

April 28, 2012
I just wanted to pop in for a few moments to remind everyone about the importance of self-love.

In the midst of hectic schedules, piling deadlines, tending to others, taking orders and endless to-do lists, don't forget to love yourself. I have noticed I've taken the short stick lately when to comes to truly paying attention to myself and what my body and mind needs. I force them to handle four hours of sleep a night and starring for hours on a computer screen when my body needs rest, relaxation, meditation, silence and a break. My body and mind have been on over-time for how many years now and if I don't slow down, I may forget what's truly important in life. Self-love encompasses self-care, self-awareness and self-confidence. It is about feeling beautiful from the inside out and embracing everything that encompasses you.

Forgive your flaws.
Challenge your views.
Reward your good deeds.
Dedicate time for true relaxation.
Accept a compliment.
Give a compliment.
Leave room for improvement.
Be confident.
Don't sell yourself short.
Be mindful.
Take a step back in order to take steps forward.

Practicing self-love is an ongoing process and challenge that we will face every day of our lives, but we can't expect to fully love one another if we can't love ourselves. Do me a favor, and yourself a favor, by taking a step back from the stresses of your life and nurture yourself. Take a walk, avoid multitasking, drink tea from a mug...not a to go cup, silence your phones, drive with the windows down, order dessert first, anything! Just remember to take care of yourself once in a while. Sometimes you just need to put yourself first.

The next couple weeks are crunch time for my college career. I will officially be graduating on May 12, 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations with a minor in Sociology. It hasn't exactly hit me that college is over, but I already feel heavy moments of nostalgia weighing in on me. With every check mark on my to-do list is a breathe of fresh air so I'm working hard to keep sane for the next couple weeks.

I do thank you all for your patience as I ease back slowly into blogging. I just wanted to spend time re-branding and truly finding my online voice. I hope everyone is doing wonderfully! Good luck on everyone's endeavors, whether it is work related, school related or just in general life related. Remember to practice self-love!

*This photograph was taken March 1, 2011 in Boone, North Carolina. This is one of my favorite views from our back porch. The quote was from a fortune cookie I received many moons ago, but has come to mean a lot of to me over the years.

I'M ALIVE. I PROMISE.

Say hello to Alexis!
She is probably the cutest little nine year old...ever. I had the pleasure of taking her pictures along with her older brother Jalen (equally as cute) a few weeks ago. That's what I've been doing during my blog hiatus... lots of photo taking along with a lot of other things. College has seriously worn me out. I still just have a few more weeks left. Come on Melissa, you can do this. It is absolute crunch time but all I want to go is start my life, after college.

I just wanted to check in with you all and say that I miss you dearly. Here's a little preview of the photo shoot we had and just to let you know, I have loads more to share that I absolutely can't wait to! The focus on the blog will be shifting a little bit, if you couldn't tell by the changes.

AND LOOK!
I'm so fancy and got my OWN domain name! It's like I'm officially an adult.
www.the-25thhour.com

If we have swapped buttons or you have a link to my blog on your site, kindly switch over to the new name :) I will make buttons soon, but not sure if I'll be doing the button swap thing...at least not right now. The 25th hour is still a work in progress, but I promise I will be back soon.

Sending you lots of love, patience, good health and incredible joy.

TUESDAY TUNES v.14 | LOVE IS MAKING ITS WAY BACK HOME

What is another cool factor of music? The music videos.
I appreciate the work that goes behind the authentic music industry. The industry that truly focuses on the art and talent of musicians. I respect every position that goes into creating an amazing album from the sound engineer to the artist of the album cover. Music videos has been a drag (primarily if you're watching MTV), but there are still some cool ones out there.

Josh Ritter's "Love Is Making Its Way Home" music video was created with 12,000 pieces of construction paper! Read more about making of the video. Talk about respectable artists. So much kudos thrown your way design team! Plus, this song is fantastic.

I love when you can truly respect the art of art itself.
Construction paper is not so "elementary" any more is it? :)
